6 Amazing Benefits of Dance Classes

Famed dancer and choreographer Martha Graham once said, “dance is the hidden language of the soul,” and we quite agree. At East West Music & Dance, our goal is to inspire students, help them find inner joy through dance and help them develop a lifelong love of dance. It takes work and practice, but there are so many benefits from dance classes, including the following.

1. Dance Classes Provide A Complete Workout

It might seem obvious that dance classes provide students with plenty of exercise, but dance classes don’t just provide a good cardio workout, dance is a full-body workout. With dance, every muscle is targeted and while students are burning calories, they also are improving their stamina, flexibility and range of motion.

Dance classes and dance training, in general, can improve your ability as an athlete in other sports. If you have a child passionate about soccer, football, softball, basketball or another sport, dance lessons can be an excellent addition to their schedule. Not only will they have a blast, but dance also increases your strength and endurance, as well as improving coordination. It doesn’t even matter which type of dance you choose, all styles from ballet to hip hop benefit your entire body.

2. Dance Improves Your Mood

Let’s face it, the last couple of years have not been easy, especially for our children and teenagers. While dance classes won’t solve all of your problems, many studies show dancing may reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. When you dance, your body releases peptide hormones known as endorphins. These hormones help relieve stress and boost your mood.

Normal exercise can release endorphins as well, but because dance is a bit more creative and varied, it requires greater attention which takes the focus off your daily life and problems and provides you with the freedom to simply let go and enjoy yourself for a while.

3. Dance Improves Your Cognitive Skills

Multiple studies demonstrate how music can improve cognition, focus and even test scores, but dance also has been shown to improve cognitive skills. Some research shows that improves memory as well as improving spatial recognition. Dance also helps young children develop gross motor skills and fine motor skills, as well as muscle memory.

As a side note, grown-ups should consider taking dance classes, as well. There have been several studies that show dancing can improve memory and even help patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia slow their cognitive decline. For your kids, a lifetime spent dancing can translate to a longer and healthier life!

If you have a child that lacks confidence, dance classes can be a great option to consider. You might believe that only those with natural dancing ability are suited to dance classes, but that’s just not the case. We’ve seen plenty of students who felt they had no “rhythm” or aptitude for dance become great dancers.

Our age-appropriate, family-friendly dance classes are small and designed to allow the instructor to provide as much individual attention as possible. This makes a huge difference and ensures that students continue to advance. As students progress, they will feel pride in their accomplishments, and this boosts their self-confidence. Their success on the dance floor can translate to improvements in many areas, including schoolwork and relationships with others.

5. Dance Provides Socialization

If we’ve learned nothing these past two years, we learned that many people, especially our children, need to be around other humans. Dance classes are social and fun, and our students build lifelong friendships. Throughout Covid, we offered classes via an online platform, and while students took classes in their homes, class time offered students a chance to see their friends and participate in a group experience, even if everyone couldn’t be in the same room.

Currently, we are still offering virtual dance classes as an option and also limiting class sizes in our dance studio in San Jose, which helps provide us with greater social distancing. We wear masks and have HEPA filters installed in each dance room, as well as opening doors and using fans to improve ventilation. Whether you feel comfortable coming into the studio or would prefer your child to enjoy classes online, you have both options available at East West Music & Dance. 

6. Dance Classes Provide A Creative Outlet

Everyone needs a creative outlet, and there are few activities more freeing and creative than dance. While we certainly learn routines and host recitals, etc., students spend time practicing on their own and this provides them with the opportunity to be as creative as they like. Many of our students will create their own original dance routines, using their favorite genres of music. The skills students learn during our dance classes will provide them with a creative outlet that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. 

Our Dance Classes

At East West Music & Dance, we offer opportunities for all levels of dancers at any age. Whether your child or teen has had years of experience or is just getting started, we have a little something for everyone, including:

  • Ballet Lessons (Ages 3 to Adult)
  • Pointe (For advanced ballet students)
  • Hip Hop Classes (Ages 10 to Adult)
  • Jazz Lessons (Ages 10 to Adult)

Additionally, we also offer an Intro to Jazz/Hip Hop/Tap class for students ages 7 to 10. In this class, students learn the fundamentals of ballet (the foundation of all dance), basic jazz techniques and the latest hip-hop moves. This class is a two-year program that will prepare students for more advanced levels and provides them with an opportunity to discover which dance styles they truly love.
